Properly managed transition could boost job creation globally and enable more inclusive growth

The unprecedented wave of technological change could boost job creation around the world and lead to more inclusive economic growth, as long as the transition is properly managed, according to a commission of policymakers and academics.

Puncturing some of the doomsday scenarios about the imminent threat of job-destroying robots, the Pathways for Prosperity project, a commission on technology and development led by the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford university, has mapped out routes to stimulate growth in low-income countries.

In two reports published today, the commission argued that advances in data analytics were already helping to transform the agricultural sector by raising farm yields and improving logistics.

Faster communications were stimulating trade in global services, such as in management advice and remote healthcare. And new digital platforms, including mobile banking and ride-hailing apps, were bringing more casual workers into formal employment.
