Science, Technology & Innovation Forum in New York

STI forum

The 2018 STI Forum was held at the United Nations' headquarters in New York. Both Pathways commissioner Kamal Bhattacharya and the commission's Head of Secretariat, Rafat Al-Akhali, spoke at the sessions.

This multi-stakeholder forum on science, technology and innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals delved into thematic areas for the implementation of the SDGs. As well as providing a venue for establishing networks between relevant stakeholders, the forum also aids the development, transfer and dissemination of relevant technologies for the Sustainable Development Goals. Session 10: STI for inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and human settlements

Kamal Bhattacharya spoke on Session 10, which meets Sustainable Development Goal 11. The session discussed the status of existing knowledge and technology, and explored the potential for how science, technology and innovation can support the achievement of SDG 11 on sustainable cities and human settlements. The session identified good practices and policy recommendations, as well as challenges and needs, with a view to facilitate the development, scaling up adoption and dissemination of relevant technologies for SDG 11.

Session 8: Supporting the implementation of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism – the way forward for joint action

Rafat Al-Akhali spoke on Session 8. The session presented a number of initiatives from across the world that support the science-based, solution-oriented, multi-stakeholder and collaborative approach of the Technology Facilitation Mechanism (TFM) including discussions on broadening their impacts and making them self-sustaining.

There are many technologies that enable better lives and livelihoods. The commission is looking at ways to ensure developing countries are on the agenda when governments and international institutions look at technologies that can transform societies - Rafat Al-Akhali
