The Financial Times

The Pathways Commission's two reports featured in an article by The Financial Times Editorial Board in response to a letter from the President and CEO of the United States Council for International Business, Peter Robinson: 'Making the internet affordable to all.'

The article notes that in 2019, it will be the 30th anniversary of  'the creation of the world wide web' and how 'as we look forward to the next 30 years, we face two great challenges.' The first being how we can 'provide access for the 3bn people who remain unconnected to the web' and the second, how we can do this 'in a risk-free way.'

The article mentions how the Pathways Commission's reports 'sketch out some useful pathways to greater equity and prosperity in the digital world' and how the commission's co-chair, Melinda Gates, has stated that ' the web is a remarkably effective tool for connecting people with markets.'

The article highlights the importance of access to the internet, as 'it has been shown to boost the economic opportunities for disadvantaged groups, notably women, the poor and rural dwellers.'
